The Benefits of Strengthening the Ankles

Research has indicated that the biomechanics of the ankle may be compromised if high heels are frequently worn. They may affect balance and strength, and this can allow falls to occur. If the desire to wear high heels is strong, it may be beneficial to alternate wearing these types of shoes with shoes that have a lower and wider heel. It may help to perform specific stretches while sitting, and this may aid in restoring strength in the ankle. Additionally, the ankle joints may become more stable, which can help to reduce the risk of injury. Heel lifts are an effective stretch for the entire foot. This is done by standing and slowly lifting the heels up and down, and then alternating feet. If you would like additional information about how to strengthen your feet from frequently wearing high heels, please consult with a podiatrist.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Sayville Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.

Teenagers and Sever's Disease

The medical condition that is referred to as Calcaneal Apophysitis is commonly known as Sever's disease. This disease occurs when the growth plate in the heel becomes swollen, and typically affects teenagers who participate in sporting activities. As growing occurs, muscles and tendons can put strain and pressure on the heel, possibly causing swelling and tenderness. An initial step in beginning treatment of this condition is to look out for high arches or flat feet that may be present. This may affect the way walking is done, and can be important to know so proper treatment techniques can begin. Mild relief may be found when gentle exercises are frequently performed that can promote mobility. Additionally, it may be beneficial to wear orthotics, as this may aid in the treatment of Sever's disease. If your child is suffering from this condition, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnosis and treat this condition.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Sayville Foot Care. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Many patients are aware they have broken their toe by the severe pain and discomfort they feel after something heavy is dropped on it. It may also become fractured if it has been stubbed against a piece of furniture. Additional symptoms can include a numbing or burning feeling, bruising, and walking can become difficult. In serious fractures, the bone may protrude from the skin, and there may even be excessive bleeding. Broken toes can occur as a result of a medical condition such as osteoporosis, where the bones may already be fragile. After a proper diagnosis is performed, which typically consists of having an X-ray taken, treatment can begin. If the toe is mildly broken, it can be taped to the toe next to it, and this may be helpful in providing additional support. This method is referred to as buddy taping. Why Do Corns Develop?

A small, hardened portion of skin on top of the toe may be referred to as a corn. It may appear to be yellow, and can cause considerable pain while wearing shoes. They can also form in between the toes, and on the bottom of the feet. A common reason why corns can develop is a result of excess friction that may come from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Patients who are afflicted with corns may find moderate relief when the foot is soaked in warm water. This may help to soften the affected area, followed by filing with a pumice stone. If it is painful to complete daily activities, wearing a corn pad over the corn may provide adequate cushioning that is needed for temporary relief. Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.
